Who are the 64 Yoginis? What are the benefits of their worship?
The 64 Yoginis are mentioned in various Puranas, each with different stories. According to some beliefs, these 64 Yoginis are forms of Adi Shakti Maa Kali. It is said that the Goddess took these forms during a fierce battle with the demon named Ghor. Another belief states that these Yoginis are companions of Goddess Parvati.
In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, it is mentioned that the 64 Yoginis emerged from Lord Krishna’s nostrils. There is also symbolic meaning behind the number 64. A complete man has 32 qualities, and so does a complete woman. Together, they form 64 qualities. Thus, the 64 Yoginis are seen as a result of the union of Shiva and Shakti, representing total completeness.
Worshipping the 64 Yoginis is believed to be equivalent to worshipping all the goddesses. Among them, the ten Mahavidyas and various Siddha Vidyas are also included. These Yoginis are different forms of Adya Shakti Kali. Some traditions say that all Yoginis belong to the Kali cult and are deeply connected to Tantra and Yogic practices.
There are 8 Yoginis in each direction. Each Yogini has an assistant, making 16 Yoginis per direction. With 4 directions, the total becomes 64. These 64 Yoginis are considered the presiding deities of 64 arts and Tantras. If even one of them blesses the devotee, the associated Tantra is said to be mastered.
Their worship is highly beneficial. Since they are connected with Tantra and Yoga, one should perform their worship only after proper guidance from an expert.
All Yoginis possess supernatural powers. Practices like black magic, enchantment, attraction, and immobilization succeed only with their grace. There are eight main Yoginis. Their names and powers are:
