The Birth Story of Lord Dattatreya

Lord Dattatreya is considered the combined incarnation of the three supreme deities—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. He was born to Mata Anusuya and Maharishi Atri.

Once, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Parvati developed pride in their chastity. To test them, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh sent Sage Narada to speak of Mata Anusuya’s supreme devotion and purity. Hearing this, the three goddesses decided to test Anusuya and sent their consorts—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh—in the guise of sages.

The three sages arrived at Anusuya’s hermitage and asked for food, with a condition: they would eat only if she fed them while seated on her lap. Mata Anusuya prayed and transformed them into six-month-old infants, then fed them. When the gods did not return to their abodes, the goddesses came and begged for forgiveness. Anusuya restored the gods to their original forms, and they blessed her that their combined form would be born as her son—Lord Dattatreya, the embodiment of the Trinity.

The 24 Gurus of Lord Dattatreya

According to the scriptures, Lord Dattatreya had 24 Gurus:
Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Sky, Sun, Moon, Ocean, Python, Pigeon, Moth, Fish, Deer, Elephant, Honeybee, Honey Collector, Kurara Bird, Virgin Girl, Serpent, Child, Pingala (courtesan), Arrow Maker, Spider, and Bhringi Insect.

Lord Dattatreya taught that excessive attachment, greed, and distraction from God turn a heavenly life into a miserable one.

The soul is one but appears in various forms.
One becomes loved by all through tolerance and selflessness.
True happiness lies in the meditation of God, not in wealth.
Even among the wicked, one must not abandon virtue.
Remain cheerful and keep learning continuously.
Avoid the delusion of beauty and attraction.
Do not hoard more than what is necessary.
Avoid excessive attachment to objects or people.
Keep striving consistently for success.
By following these divine teachings, a person can attain success and peace in life.
