Devuthani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Once, Goddess Lakshmi told Lord Narayan that He stays awake constantly and sleeps for countless years, which leads to the destruction of all living beings. She requested Him to sleep regularly every year so that she too could get time to rest. Lord Narayan smiled and said that His constant wakefulness troubles all deities, especially Lakshmi. She never gets time off from His service. He agreed with her and decided to sleep every year for four months during the rainy season. He said this sleep would be known as ‘Alpanidra’ (short sleep) and ‘Mahanidra’ (great sleep) of the doomsday. His short sleep would become a holy and auspicious festival for devotees. Those who worship Him during this period and celebrate His sleep and awakening will receive His blessings along with Goddess Lakshmi.
