Karwa Chauth Katha – Read the Story of Eternal Marital Bliss
Women who observe Karwa Chauth take a bath in the morning and make a vow of fasting. They pray to God for the long life of their husbands. They stay without food and water all day and perform puja in the evening during the auspicious time. They also listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha. According to beliefs, any fast remains incomplete without listening to the story.
Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha Time 2025
The puja and story time of Karwa Chauth is from 05:46 PM to 07:02 PM on 10 October. Reading the Karwa Chauth Katha during this time brings great results.
Karwa Chauth Katha
In ancient times, a merchant had seven sons and one daughter. On Karwa Chauth, the seven daughters-in-law and the daughter observed the fast. In the evening, when the merchant and his sons came for food, they saw their sister hungry. They asked her to eat, but she refused, saying she would eat only after worshipping the moon. The brothers became restless when the moon did not appear. They went out of the city, lit a fire, and returned. They told their sister the moon had risen and asked her to break her fast. She could not understand the trick and broke her fast by seeing the fire as the moon. Because of this broken fast, her husband fell ill and lost all wealth in his illness. When she realized the truth, she worshipped Lord Ganesha with full devotion and asked forgiveness for her mistake. With the blessings of Ganesha, her husband regained health.
Karwa Chauth Katha
According to belief, Goddess Parvati observed this fast for Lord Shiva. She gained eternal marital bliss through this vrat. Since then, married women observe this fast for the long life of their husbands. Another story tells that once a battle took place between gods and demons. The demons were winning. Lord Brahma told the wives of the gods to observe the Karwa Chauth fast. On Krishna Chaturthi of Kartik month, all the goddesses kept the fast for their husbands. Because of this, the gods won. Since then, women began to observe this fast. It is also said that Draupadi observed the fast to protect the Pandavas from difficulties.
Karwa Chauth Mythological Katha
Goddess Karwa lived with her husband near the Tungabhadra river. One day, her husband went to bathe in the river. A crocodile caught his leg and pulled him inside. He called his wife for help. Hearing his cries, Karwa rushed to the river. She tied the crocodile to a tree with a cotton thread. Because of her purity and devotion, the crocodile could not move. Both her husband and the crocodile’s lives were in danger.
Karwa then prayed to Yama, the god of death. She asked him to give life to her husband and death to the crocodile. Yama said he could not do that because the crocodile still had life left, and her husband’s life span was over. Karwa became angry and threatened to curse him. Seeing her anger, Yama sent the crocodile to the world of the dead and gave life back to her husband. Since then, married women pray to Karwa Mata on this day, asking, “O Karwa Mata, as you saved your husband, protect my marital bliss too.”
