Kharmas 2025 About to Begin? Stay Away from Auspicious Work
Hindu traditions consider the month of Kharmas 2025 inauspicious for auspicious activities. In 2025, Kharmas will remain from 16 December 2025 to 14 January 2026. It ends on the sacred occasion of Makar Sankranti (14 January). People believe that they should avoid certain auspicious activities during this period. But before that, the question arises—what is Kharmas?
What Is Kharmas?
The word khar is a Sanskrit term that means donkey. According to a popular belief related to Kharmas, once Lord Surya traveled around the universe on his chariot driven by seven horses, and he did not have permission to stop anywhere. People believed that if he stopped, all activities in the universe would come to a halt. After some time, the horses became thirsty and exhausted because they did not receive rest. Seeing this, Lord Surya became stressed and stopped his chariot near a riverbank so the horses could drink water and rest.
Suddenly, Lord Surya realized that if he stopped his chariot, all activities on Earth would cease and cause problems. At that moment, he saw two donkeys (khar) near the pond. He let the horses rest and drink water and attached the donkeys to his chariot so that the chariot would not stop. But the donkeys slowed down the chariot. He somehow completed the monthly cycle, and the horses received rest. Afterward, he reattached the horses to his chariot, and this process continued throughout the year, forming one solar month known as Kharmas, which comes once every solar year.
Kharmas Comes at the Same Time Every Year
Kharmas is the period when the Sun transits through Sagittarius or Pisces, which causes restrictions on auspicious and ceremonial tasks. This period occurs twice a year—once in December–January and again in March–April. People avoid activities like marriage, housewarming, and tonsure rituals during this time because they consider it inauspicious. Kharmas begins when the Sun enters Sagittarius and ends when the Sun enters Capricorn.
