Know Why Mother Lakshmi Chose Only the Owl as Her Vehicle
People worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha to gain wealth, splendor, happiness, and peace. Religious belief holds that anyone who receives the grace of Mother Lakshmi never faces a lack of wealth, prosperity, or splendor in their life. In Sanatan Dharma, all deities possess some animal or bird as their vehicle. According to certain beliefs, Mother Lakshmi selected the owl bird as Her vehicle. Let’s explore the beliefs behind Mother Lakshmi’s choice of the owl as Her vehicle.
Mahalakshmi’s Ride: The Owl
The owl possesses an active nature. It constantly works to find food and fill its stomach. It carries out this task with complete dedication. Lakshmi’s vehicle, the owl, teaches us that Mother Lakshmi always graces the lives of people who work hard day and night. She permanently resides in the homes of diligent people.
The Story Goes Like This
According to the legend of the owl becoming Mahalakshmi’s vehicle, after the creation of nature and the animals/birds, all the gods and goddesses chose their vehicles. Mother Lakshmi also came to Earth to select Her vehicle. At that time, all the animals and birds presented themselves to Mother Lakshmi and requested Her to choose them. Lakshmi Ji told all the animals and birds that She would travel on Earth on the new moon night of the Kartik month (Diwali). She promised to make the animal or bird that reached Her first Her vehicle. The night of the new moon is extremely dark, making it difficult for all animals and birds to see clearly. On the night of the new moon in the month of Kartik, when Mother Lakshmi arrived on Earth, the owl saw Mother Lakshmi first. It reached Mother Lakshmi before all other animals and birds. The owl’s quality pleased Mother Lakshmi. Pleased with the owl’s attributes, Mother Lakshmi chose it as Her ride. Since then, people also call Mother Lakshmi Uluk Vahini (One who rides the Owl).
The Significance Holds Such Importance
People consider MahaLakshmi’ ride owl, a symbol of auspiciousness and wealth in Indian culture. According to Puranic belief, the owl stands as the wisest nocturnal creature. The owl knows about the past and the future beforehand. Seeing an owl on the night of Diwali signals the arrival of Lakshmi.
