Story of Maa Katyayani

People consider Maa Katyayani as the daughter of Rishi Katyayan. Rishi Katyayan performed intense penance to attain Maa. Pleased with his penance, Maa took birth in his home as a daughter. Rishi Katyayan first worshipped Mata Katyayani. Her complexion shines like gold, and she rides a lion. Her worship removes all marital defects. According to the legend, Maharishi Katyayan performed penance to have the Goddess as his daughter.

Pleased with his penance, the Goddess granted him the boon of being born as his daughter. At the same time, demon Mahishasura’s atrocities increased. Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh created the Goddess, who was born in Maharishi Katyayan’s home and became known as Katyayani. Maharishi Katyayan worshipped the Goddess on Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami. On Dashami, the Goddess killed Mahishasura and freed the deities from his tyranny.

Another legend says Gopis worshipped Maa Katyayani to accept Lord Krishna as their husband. Devotees also consider Maa Katyayani as the presiding Goddess of Brajmandal.

Mata Katyayani Destroyed Demon Mahishasura

Mata Katyayani killed demon Mahishasura. People also call her Mahishasuramardini. When Mahishasura’s terror increased, Maa appeared in her divine form. Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and other deities gave their weapons to Maa. The grandest temple of Mata Katyayani stands in Braj, as devotees regard her as the Goddess of Brajmandal. Her form shines brightly and appears magnificent. She has four arms. Her right upper hand stays in Abhaya Mudra and the lower in Varada Mudra. Her left upper hand holds a sword, and the lower hand carries a lotus. Her vehicle is a lion.

Devotees Offer Honey to Maa

Honey holds special importance in Mata Katyayani’s worship. Devotees also offer halwa and kheer to Maa. Maa loves the color red. To receive Maa’s blessings, devotees offer 108 lotus flowers or hibiscus flowers. They can also perform yajna with these flowers. If someone cannot perform a special ritual, they should offer 108 red flowers to Maa while chanting “Om Katyayani Namah.” Devotees can also recite Durga Saptashati during Maa’s special worship.
