Method of Tarpan
- Sit facing the south direction.
- Take water in the right hand and add black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass.
- Slowly offer the water to the earth through the gap between the ring finger, middle finger, and thumb.
- While releasing the water, chant the names of the ancestors or the mantra “Om Pitrubhyo Namah”.
- Perform Tarpan three times for each ancestor.
- Offer Tarpan for three generations of ancestors, including father, mother, grandparents, and great-grandparents.
- For unknown ancestors, perform Tarpan by chanting “Sarvebhyah Pitrubhyo Namah”.
- After Tarpan, donate food, clothes, or dakshina to a Brahmin, saint, or needy person.
- After Tarpan, feed a cow, dog, crow, and ants.
