Rishi Panchami 2025 – Sacred Fast, Puja Vidhi, and Its Significance

Rishi Panchami 2025 is an important Hindu festival that falls every year a day after Ganesh Chaturthi. It is observed on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. This festival is especially observed by women to seek the blessings of the Saptarishis. On this day, devotees worship the seven sages (Saptarishis). Overall, this fast represents purity, devotion, and atonement. Women observe it to seek forgiveness for any mistakes made unknowingly during their menstrual cycle. The fast not only symbolizes physical purity but also encourages mental and spiritual purification.

Why Do We Celebrate Rishi Panchami?

According to ancient legends, there once lived a king named Sitaswa and his queen Bindhyamati. They had one son and several daughters. The king’s daughter was deeply religious and devoted to service. The king married one of his daughters into a family that lacked religious and moral values. Over time, the princess’s family began facing constant sorrow and difficulties.

One day, she shared her troubles with her parents. The king consulted a great sage to find the cause. The sage revealed that she had never performed any religious or spiritual duties in her life, which led to her family’s suffering. The king asked for a solution, and the sage advised her to observe the Rishi Panchami fast on the Panchami Tithi of the month of Bhadrapada and to worship the Saptarishis with devotion, following all rules of the fast. The princess obeyed, performed the fast, and her family regained peace and happiness. Since then, Rishi Panchami has been considered an important fast in Hindu tradition.

  • Puja Preparation: Place a red or yellow cloth on a wooden platform (chowki). Install an image or idol of the Saptarishis on it.
  • Worship of the Saptarishis: Bathe the idols of the seven sages—Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Vashistha—with Ganga water. Offer flowers, roli, sandalwood, akshat (rice grains), a lamp, and incense.
  • Mantras and Story: Chant the mantras “Om Kashyapaya Namah, Om Atraye Namah, Om Bharadwajaya Namah, Om Vishwamitre Namah, Om Gautamaya Namah, Om Jamadagnaye Namah, Om Vashishthaya Namah” while worshipping. After the puja, listen to or recite the Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha.
  • Breaking the Fast (Paran): Keep a complete fast for the day. Avoid consuming salt. Break the fast in the evening after the puja by eating fruits, milk, and dishes made from kuttu or sama rice.
