The Chaturmas period marks Lord Vishnu’s divine rest, yet these four months overflow with festivals. Among them, Navratri celebrates the worship of the Divine Mother. Although devotees observe Navratri four times a year—including two secret Navratris—Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri hold special prominence. Sharadiya Navratri stands out as the most vibrant celebration, observed from the first day (Pratipada) to the ninth day (Navami) of the Ashwin month after the Bhadrapada month ends. How to Perform Sharadiya Navratri Puja
- Clean the puja room before Ghatasthapana.
- Bathe and decorate the main entrance with a leafy toran.
- Place the Goddess’s idol on a decorated altar (chowki).
- Install the sacred kalash.
- Sow barley seeds in an earthen pot.
- Tie a sacred thread (kalawa) on the kalash.
- Recite the Durga Saptashati if you have set up the altar at home.
- On Mahanavami, perform a sacred fire ritual (yajna) in honor of the Goddess.

During Navratri, devotees worship nine forms of Goddess Durga, all manifestations of Goddess Parvati:

Significance of Sharadiya Navratri
Sharadiya Navratri is also called Maha Navratri. According to legend, Goddess Durga fought the demon Mahishasura for nine days and defeated him on the tenth day. This day is celebrated as Vijayadashami. In another tradition, Lord Rama killed Ravana on Vijayadashami.
