When does Kharmaas start, and what is important to know?

Kharmaas occurs twice a year according to the Hindu Panchang. During this time, people typically refrain from conducting auspicious activities. However, it is a significant period for pursuing spiritual goals or performing religious rituals at home. Kharmaas usually begins when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Sagittarius, which is ruled by Guru (Jupiter).

This period is also referred to as Mal Maas. In 2024, the Sun will enter Sagittarius on December 15. During Kharmaas 2024, worship of Lord Vishnu and the Sun God is emphasized. Meditating with full devotion during this time is believed to bring prosperity and happiness. If you plan to hold auspicious events like weddings or housewarming ceremonies, it’s advisable to avoid them during Kharmaas, as such activities are thought to lead to difficulties. Let’s explore when Kharmaas 2024 begins and ends, along with what actions to take or avoid during this period.

When will Kharmaas 2024 begin?

The Hindu Panchang states that the Sun will enter Sagittarius on December 15, 2024, marking the start of Kharmaas. Sagittarius is governed by Guru (Jupiter).

Start of Kharmaas 2024: Sunday, December 15, 2024, at 10:19 PM.

During this time, the Sun resides in the zodiac sign of Guru, and astrologically, this period is deemed inauspicious for initiating any auspicious activities.

When will Kharmaas 2024 end?

Kharmaas will conclude when the Sun moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn, which will also align with the celebration of Makar Sankranti. The Sun is set to transition into Capricorn on January 14, 2025. After this date, it will be appropriate to resume all auspicious activities.

End of Kharmaas 2024: January 14, 2025.

What is Kharmaas or Mal Maas?

Kharmaas, often referred to as Mal Maas, is a period when the Sun’s position weakens, leading to a decrease in its beneficial effects. In astrology, the Sun symbolizes the soul, energy, and strength. When the Sun enters Sagittarius or Pisces, its energy is perceived to be diminished. Consequently, activities initiated during this time are thought to lack permanence or stability. It is generally advised against conducting weddings, housewarmings, new business ventures, or other new beginnings during MalMaas, as the chances of success are believed to be low. However, this period holds great significance for religious practices. Engaging in worship of Lord Vishnu, performing acts of charity, and fasting are highly encouraged during this time.

What to do during Mal Maas?

Although Mal maas is a time to refrain from starting new auspicious endeavors, it doesn’t imply that no activities can take place. Here’s what you can do:

  • Engage in worship, recite hymns, and show devotion to Lord Vishnu.
  • Chant religious texts and meditate, as these practices are believed to bring positive outcomes.
  • Donating to those in need is particularly important during Kharmaas. Giving food, clothing, money, or other essentials is considered very virtuous.
  • Fasting and meditation during Kharmaas can promote mental peace.
Many individuals observe various fasts to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu, which may lead to prosperity.

What should you avoid during Mal Maas?

  • Avoid doing any auspicious activities like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, land purchases, or starting new ventures during this time.
  • Do not initiate new businesses.
  • Refrain from eating tamasic foods; focus on vegetarian and sattvic options instead.
  • Avoid using harsh language or engaging in negative conversations.
  • It’s best not to buy new vehicles or properties during this period.
  • Consider postponing large social gatherings or ceremonies.

Remedies during Kharmaas:

  • While Kharmaas is in effect, you can undertake specific remedies to honor the Sun God and Lord Vishnu:
  • Rise early and offer prayers to the Sun God, making offerings such as jaggery, milk, and rice as acts of charity. This will attract the blessings of the Sun God and help fulfill your wishes.
  • Recite the mantras of Jupiter and the Sun during Kharmaas to invite positivity into your life and please both the Sun and Lord Vishnu.
  • If you’re experiencing financial difficulties or marital issues, worship Goddess Lakshmi and offer her Sindoor (vermillion) to help resolve your problems.
  • Chant the one-syllable seed mantra “ॐ घृणि: सूर्याय नम:” during this time. Using a red sandalwood mala while chanting will enhance its effects.
