How to Perform Puja on Dhanteras 2025

Perform the puja during Pradosh Kaal (45 minutes after sunset) for auspicious results. Follow this method for the ritual:
Set up the puja space in the north direction of the house.
Wear clean clothes and take a vow for the puja.
Start by worshipping Lord Ganesha.
Install the idol or yantra of Lord Kuber.
Install the idol of Goddess Lakshmi made of silver or clay.
Offer yellow clothes and yellow flowers to Lord Kuber.
Decorate Goddess Lakshmi with red flowers and vermillion.
Offer kheer or halwa as bhog.
Chant the mantra “Om Shreem Kuberaya Namah”.
Recite Shree Suktam or Lakshmi Stotra.
After the puja, place the Yama Deepak in the south direction of the house.

Special Importance of Yama Deepak

On the night of Dhanteras, lighting a lamp in the south direction outside the house is considered extremely auspicious. This lamp is dedicated to Lord Yama, the God of Death. It is believed that this practice reduces the risk of untimely death and diseases, and brings peace and prosperity to the household.

Yama Deepdaan – When Even Death Turned Back

Once upon a time, King Himaraj’s son’s horoscope predicted his death on the fourth day after marriage. The king and queen were very worried. As predicted, the marriage took place, and the queen informed the daughter-in-law of the danger.
The daughter-in-law was wise and devout. On the fourth day, she did not allow her husband to sleep and lit rows of lamps, gold-silver ornaments, and wealth around the house. She sat at the entrance and sang devotional songs for her husband.
At night, when Lord Yama came to take the prince’s soul, the brightness and devotion impressed him. Without taking his life, he returned silently. Since then, this day is known as Yama Deepdaan, and people believe that lighting a lamp on this night wards off untimely death.

Worship of Lord Dhanvantari

During the churning of the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of nectar. He is considered the father of Ayurveda and the God of health. Worshipping him on this day brings health, long life, and peace.

Use Tulsi leaves, neem leaves, and Ganga water during the puja. Chant the mantra “Om Dhanvantarye Namah”.
