Kapaleshwar Mandir: Shiva Without Nandi

Kapaleshwar Mandir in Panchavati is a mystery. It is one of the rare Shiva temples in the world where there is no Nandi (the bull) seated in front of the Lord.

Significance: The Legend of Brahma Hatya

  • The Story: It is believed that Lord Shiva accidentally killed a cow (or Brahma), and Nandi advised him to take a dip in Ramkund to wash off the sin. Since Nandi acted as a Guru, Shiva requested him not to sit at his feet in this temple.
  • Location: It sits directly opposite the Godavari river Ramkund.
