Significance of Kartik Purnima

Kartik Purnima is of great importance. Being a full moon day, special worship is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi and Lord Vishnu. Additionally, on Tripuri Purnima, Lord Shiva is also honored. Diyas (lamps) are floated on the banks of sacred rivers. Bathing in holy rivers like the Ganga on Purnima is considered highly significant. It is believed that bathing and making donations on this day brings benefits equivalent to performing 100 Ashwamedha Yajnas. This day is especially auspicious in every way. In South India, the Tulsi Vivah festival concludes on this day.

Story Behind Purnima

On Kartik Purnima, devotees observe fasting. Followers of Lord Shiva engage in Rudrabhishek worship to show their gratitude, while those devoted to Lord Vishnu recite the Satyanarayan Katha. The tale of Kartik Purnima tells of three demons—Vidyumnmali, Tarakaksh, and Veeryavan—who took control of the universe. Collectively known as Tripurasur, they possessed a boon that allowed them to be defeated only by a single arrow. Lord Shiva vanquished them with just one arrow. The gods were overjoyed and celebrated Diwali by lighting lamps in the sacred city of Kashi. Since that time, Purnima has also been called Dev Diwali. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu took his Matsya (fish) avatar. Additionally, some traditions hold that Kartikeya’s birthday falls on this holy date.
