Kumbh Mela 2025 – Dates and Important Events

The Kumbh Mela, which occurs once every 12 years, will begin in Prayagraj in January 2025. It is believed that bathing at the Triveni Sangam during significant festivals washes away all troubles and brings wealth, prosperity, and opens the doors to liberation (moksha). A popular verse about the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is:

Makarasthe Divanathe Vrisharashigate Gurau ||
Prayage Kumbh Yogo Vai Maghamaase Vidhukshaye ||

This means that when Jupiter is in the Taurus sign and the Sun enters the Capricorn sign, the Kumbh Mela is organized.

Where is the Kumbh Mela Held?

According to ancient stories, when the nectar was obtained from the churning of the ocean, some drops fell to the Earth during a dispute between the demons and the gods. The locations where these drops fell are where the Kumbh Mela is held: Haridwar, Ujjain, Prayagraj and Nashik. This year, the Kumbh Mela is being organized in Prayagraj.

Story of the Kumbh (Nectar Pot)

Some ancient narratives state that to protect the nectar pot during the battle between the gods and demons, some drops of nectar fell to Earth. The places where these drops landed are where the Mahakumbh is celebrated. The Sun god, Moon god, and Guru Brihaspati made great efforts to save this nectar, which is why the conjunction of these celestial bodies leads to the celebration of the Mahakumbh festival. Bathing in the sacred rivers during this time is believed to fulfill all desires and free the body from ailments.
