Mahakal Jyotirlinga – Mystery, Worship Method, and Mantras

All the Jyotirlingas across the country are sources of divine energy. Each of the 12 Jyotirlingas carries its own unique significance. These are the sacred sites where Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga and established his energy. Even today, the direct energy of Lord Shiva is present in all these Jyotirlingas, granting devotees the blessings they seek. Among all the Jyotirlingas, Lord Mahakal is particularly revered. This temple is renowned for its powerful energy and enigmatic qualities. Mahakal is often referred to as the god of time, with some viewing him as the god of death. It is said that Lord Mahakal vanquished the demon Dushan here, and since that time, Lord Shiva has resided in this form of energy.

Lord is Dakshinamurti Swaroop

Mahakal is unique as the only Jyotirlinga that faces south. The south is associated with Yamraj, the god of death, which is why Lord Shiva is also regarded as the god of death in this context. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Dakshinamurti. Dakshinamurti represents one of Lord Shiva’s greatest incarnations and serves as the teacher of all teachers. Through the worship of Lord Mahakal, seekers of knowledge gain wisdom, those desiring wealth achieve prosperity, and those seeking liberation attain Moksha. The southward orientation of the temple also adds to its significant tantric importance.

The Only Jyotirlinga with Bhasma Aarti

Ujjain’s Jyotirlinga is the sole site where Bhasma Aarti is performed. A popular legend explains this tradition. After Lord Shiva defeated the demon Dushan, he adorned himself with the ashes of the demon, which became a customary practice. Initially, fresh ashes from funeral pyres were offered to Mahakal, but now, ash made from cow dung cakes is used for the offerings.

Puja Vidhi of Lord Mahakal

The method of worshiping Lord Mahakal is quite straightforward. Even a simple offering of water can please Lord Shiva. However, performing Rudrabhishekam is regarded as the most effective way to receive various blessings. You can also worship Lord Mahakal at home. On Mondays, it is customary to offer milk or curd to Lord Shiva. After this, you should present rice, chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya,’ and then offer Bilva leaves along with yellow sandalwood during your worship. It is recommended to chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times while worshiping.

Items for Donation

On Mondays, it is beneficial to donate milk, curd, and white clothes, as these offerings are pleasing to Lord Shiva and help alleviate doshas associated with the moon. Lord Shiva bestows blessings upon his devotees. For those affected by Pitru Dosha or experiencing financial hardships, donating raw rice mixed with black sesame seeds on a Monday is advised. This act is believed to help resolve financial issues.
