Significance of Maha Shivratri

Lord Shiva is the ruler of the Chaturdashi Tithi. While Shivratri comes every month, Maha Shivratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of Phalguna. This marks a transition in the seasons. Special worship of Lord Shiva during this period can fulfill all desires. Though the general rule is to worship Lord Shiva at night, on Maha Shivratri, one can perform the worship throughout the day. Worshipping Lord Shiva on this day can also remove various doshas (flaws) in one’s astrological chart.

When to Observe the MahaShivratri Fast

The night of Maha Shivratri holds a special significance as it falls under the Nishith Kaal (midnight time). To observe the fast, it is necessary to wait for the beginning of Chaturdashi Tithi and the eighth Muhurat of the night. In 2025, Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on February 26.

MahaShivratri Fast Story

According to other beliefs, Lord Shiva manifested as the Jyotirlingam on this day, which is another reason why this festival is celebrated.
