Who is Mata Baglamukhi and Where Are Her Sacred Temples in the Country?

Mata Baglamukhi is the eighth Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas. She is also known by names like Brahmastra, Pitambara, and Vishnuvinita. According to some beliefs, Mata Baglamukhi first appeared at the Haridra Sarovar in Saurashtra, Gujarat. Due to her origin from this lake, she is also called Pitambara. According to a legend, a terrible storm once swept across the universe, and even Lord Vishnu could not protect it. He called upon the Adishakti, and Mother appeared as Pitambara from Haridra Sarovar to stop the storm. Thus, she was worshipped as the Goddess of Stambhana.

Meaning of Baglamukhi

Some tantric texts mention her name as Vaglamukhi instead of Baglamukhi. The “Va” stands for Varuni, “Ga” means giver of Siddhi, and “La” refers to the wealth of the Earth. Some believe her divine name comes from her unparalleled beauty. Often, she is depicted pulling the tongue of a demon. It is said that she can instantly eliminate enemies. Lord Brahma was the first to worship her.
