Worship of Mata Katyayani for Attaining Love in Life

The worship of Mata Katyayani holds special significance during the Chaitra Navratri. On the sixth day of Navratri, devotees should perform the worship of Goddess Katyayani. She is the goddess of love and marriage, and through her grace, one attains love, fortune, progeny, and a blissful marital life.

Worshipping her helps to resolve marriage-related problems and alleviates the tension in married life. The Gopis of Braj also worshipped Goddess Katyayani, seeking the love of Lord Krishna. The worship of Goddess Katyayani during Chaitra Navratri will take place on April 3, 2025.

How Goddess Katyayani Manifested

According to the tales in the scriptures, mata Katyayani is considered the daughter of Sage Katyayan. Sage Katyayan performed intense penance to obtain the goddess. Pleased by his penance, Goddess Katyayani was born in his household as a daughter. It is believed that Sage Katyayan was the first to worship Goddess Katyayani. The goddess is described as having a golden-like radiant complexion and riding a lion. Worshipping Goddess Katyayani removes all flaws in marital life.

Mata Katyayani Killed Mahishasura

It was Goddess Katyayani who killed the demon Mahishasura. One of her names is Mahishasurmardini, the Slayer of Mahishasura. When the terror of Mahishasura grew, the divine incarnation of Goddess Katyayani took place. The gods, including Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, bestowed their divine weapons upon her.

The largest temple dedicated to Goddess Katyayani is located in Braj, as she is also known as the deity of Brajmandal. Goddess Katyayani’s form is dazzling and majestic, with four arms. Her right upper hand is in the Abhay Mudra (gesture of fearlessness), and the lower one is in the Var Mudra (gesture of granting boons). In her left upper hand, she holds a sword, and in the lower hand, she holds a lotus flower. Her vehicle is a lion.

Offerings to Mata Katyayani

Honey has a special significance in the worship of Goddess Katyayani. Along with honey, offerings of halwa and kheer can also be made to the goddess. Red is her favorite color, and to gain her special grace, one should offer 108 lotus flowers or hibiscus flowers. Yajnas can also be performed with these flowers. If you are unable to perform a specific puja, you can offer 108 red flowers to the goddess while chanting the mantra “Om Katyayani Namah.” Additionally, reciting the Durga Saptashati during the worship will bring divine blessings.
