People celebrate Narak Chaturdashi one day before Diwali. Some also refer to it as Chhoti Diwali, Roop Chaudas, or Kali Chaudas. It holds great importance in Hinduism. It marks the second day of the five-day Diwali festival and falls on the Chaturdashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month. In many regions, devotees worship Goddess Kali with special rituals on this day. According to religious beliefs, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day, which is why it is called Narak Chaturdashi. Additionally, people worship Yama, Goddess Kali, and Lord Hanuman, seeking freedom from sins, beauty, and protection from untimely death.

- As per the Panchang, Narak Chaturdashi in 2025 will be observed on 20 October 2025.
- Chaturdashi Tithi starts: 19 October 2025 at 01:51 PM
- Chaturdashi Tithi ends: 20 October 2025 at 03:44 PM
- Abhyang Snan Muhurat: 20 October from 05:13 AM to 06:25 AM
This pre-sunrise period is the most auspicious for bathing with sesame oil. Abhyang Snan holds the highest importance on Chaturdashi. People believe that taking this holy bath saves them from going to hell. They should use til oil while applying ubtan (herbal paste) during the bath.
Importance of Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi carries deep religious and spiritual significance. As per the legend, Lord Krishna, with his wife Satyabhama, killed the demon Narakasura, who had imprisoned 16,000 women. The festival celebrates this victory of good over evil.
On this day:
- Worshipping Yama removes the fear of untimely death.
- Worshipping Goddess Kali protects from negative energies.
- Performing Abhyang Snan grants liberation from hell and helps attain heaven.
- In some regions, people also celebrate Hanuman Jayanti on this day, believing that Lord Hanuman was born on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi. This festival promotes devotion, purity, and positivity.
How to Perform Narak Chaturdashi 2025
Morning Abhyang Snan: Wake up before sunrise. Massage your body with til (sesame) oil and bathe with water containing Apamarga leaves.
Yama Tarpan: After the bath, face the south direction and offer water mixed with sesame seeds to Lord Yama three times, chanting the following mantras:
- ‘Om Yamaya Namah, Om Dharmarajaya Namah, Om Mrityave Namah,
- Om Antakaya Namah, Om Vaivasvataya Namah, Om Kalaya Namah,
- Om Sarvabhutakshayaya Namah, Om Audumbaraya Namah,
- Om Dadhrya Namah, Om Neelaya Namah, Om Parameshtine Namah,
- Om Vrikodaraya Namah, Om Chitraya Namah, Om Chitraguptaya Namah’
- Puja Preparation: Clean your puja area and sprinkle Ganga water. Place a clean cloth on a chowki (platform) and set idols or images of Lord Krishna, Goddess Kali, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Yama.
- Deity Worship: Light lamps, offer incense, flowers, fruits, sweets, and food.
- Offer tulsi leaves and butter-mishri to Lord Krishna.
- Offer red flowers to Goddess Kali.
- Offer laddoos to Lord Hanuman.

Deepdaan (Lighting of Lamps)
- In the evening, light oil lamps at the main entrance of your house. Place one lamp in the south direction for Lord Yama and pray for the protection of your family from untimely death.
- While worshipping Lord Hanuman, recite the Hanuman Chalisa 9 times to bring peace and prosperity. After the puja, donate food, clothes, and money to the poor. Read or listen to the story of Narak Chaturdashi, which describes how Lord Krishna killed Narakasura.
Remedies for Narak Chaturdashi 2025
For Debt Relief:
- Light a 9-wick ghee lamp in front of Lord Hanuman. Offer laddoos equal to your age and recite Hanuman Chalisa 9 times. Distribute the prasad to children the next day.
- For Peace and Prosperity:
- Light a lamp in the name of ancestors and chant the Lakshmi mantra –
