In 2025, Parshuram Jayanti will be celebrated on April 29. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the third day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. This day is also celebrated as Akshay Tritiya across the country. According to the Puranas and scriptures, Lord Parshuram was born during the alignment of six auspicious planets. Born to sage Jamadagni and mother Renuka, Parshuram’s birth occurred under a rare planetary conjunction, which granted him divine strength and devotion to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva, pleased with his penance, granted him the powerful weapon, the axe (Parshu). Many mythological tales recount Parshuram’s valor and bravery. He is also known for annihilating the entire Haihaya dynasty of the unrighteous king Sahastrabahu to avenge the murder of his father.

According to tales, he once killed his mother on his father’s command but later, through a boon, restored her life. In some stories, Lord Parshuram is known for killing 21 generations of Kshatriyas to avenge his father’s death. However, other scriptures suggest that he annihilated only the Haihaya dynasty of Kshatriyas, not all Kshatriyas, as a retaliation for the murder of his father by King Sahastrarjun’s sons.

Parshuram’s Birthplace – Janapav

According to belief, the ashram of sage Jamadagni and mother Renuka was located in the hills of Janapav in the Malwa-Nimar region of Avantika. There, Parshuram lived with his five brothers—Rukmvan, Sukhen, Vasu, Vishwavan, and Ram. Parshuram performed intense devotion to Lord Shiva, which earned him the divine weapon, the axe. This is why he came to be known as Parshuram. On Parshuram Jayanti, various religious activities are organized in Janapav, where several holy rivers, including the Chambal and Gambhir, are believed to originate.
