The Story of Goddess Shakambhari Mata
Durgamasur, a demon from the family of Hiranyaksha, was very cruel and merciless. To gain strength, he performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased with his devotion, Brahma granted him a boon. The demon asked for the four Vedas, which were granted by Brahma. After receiving the Vedas, the demon’s knowledge of rituals and ceremonies vanished, leading to chaos on Earth. With the loss of these sacred texts, the world fell into suffering, and the gods became weak.
At this point, the gods sought refuge in the caves of Mount Sumeru and began praying to the most powerful Goddess. Upon hearing their prayers, the Goddess manifested, and her tears began to pour like rivers. Her tears nourished the earth, bringing relief to the suffering beings. The Goddess took on the form of Shakambhari, holding grains, vegetables, fruits, and herbs in her eight hands, feeding the hungry and offering sustenance to all creatures until the new crops grew. From then on, she became known as Goddess Shakambhari.
