Pradosha Vrat is observed on both Trayodashi Tithis, i.e. Shukla Paksha Trayodashi and Krishna Paksha Trayodashi, in lunar month. For Pradosham Vrat, day is fixed when Trayodashi Tithi falls during Pradosha Kala which starts after Sunset. The time window after Sunset when Trayodashi Tithi and Pradosha time overlaps is auspicious for Shiva Puja.

When Pradosham day falls on Saturday, it is known as Shani Pradosha. Shani Pradosha Vrat is observed to get relief from various problems and obstacles. Saturday is governed by Lord Shani. According to scriptures, Lord Shiva is described as the Guru of Lord Shani. Therefore, Shani Pradosha Vrat is considered effective for removing issues related to the Shani, including Kala Sarpa Dosha and Pitru Dosha.

Devotees who observe this fast following the proper scriptural methods receive relief from all planetary defects through the blessings of Lord Shiva. Due to the blessings of Lord Shani, this fast is also known as the one that breaks the bondage of Karma.
