What is Ketu ? Is Ketu Negative ?

Ketu is a significant entity in astrology, often viewed as a negative influence, though it can yield positive outcomes in certain situations. Some astrologers even regard Ketu as a pathway to liberation (moksha). When Ketu aligns with a benefic planet, it can produce favorable results. However, it is frequently linked to one of the most notable doshas in a birth chart, known as Kalsarpa Dosha. Ketu is always positioned seven houses ahead of Rahu, and Kalsarpa Dosha arises when all planets are situated between Rahu and Ketu. Additionally, Ketu can contribute to various other doshas in a horoscope. This text will delve into the nature of Ketu, its associated mantras, and ways to harness its positive influences.

The Origin of Ketu

The tale of Ketu’s origin is tied to the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). According to the Puranas, there was a demon named Swarbhanu. When Lord Vishnu took on the form of Mohini, Swarbhanu disguised himself as a god and mingled with the deities. As Mohini distributed the nectar (amrita) to the gods, Swarbhanu managed to drink some as well. To safeguard the nectar from the demons, Lord Vishnu severed Swarbhanu’s head with his Sudarshan Chakra. After seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings, Swarbhanu’s head transformed into Rahu, while his body became Ketu. Both were then assigned a place among the nine planets (Navagraha).

Ketu and Lord Vishnu’s Matsya Avatar

This Planet is linked to Lord Vishnu’s Matsya (fish) incarnation. Worshiping Lord Vishnu in this form can facilitate liberation (moksha) through Ketu. Among the ten Mahavidyas (the ten great forms of goddess worship), Goddess Chhinnamasta is associated with both Rahu and Ketu. Ketu’s constellations include Ashwini, Magha, and Moola. For individuals born under these constellations, it is essential to mitigate Its effects. These constellations are recognized as part of the Gandmool group.

Ketu’s Nature

In family dynamics, It is often seen as a grandfather figure. Those influenced by It tend to seek solitude, distancing themselves from family ties and material concerns. When Ketu has a positive influence in their astrological chart, individuals can evolve into wise sages. However, It also fosters a sense of loneliness. If Its influence is weak or negative, it may lead to withdrawal, moodiness, or even social isolation.

Ketu’s Mahadasha

The Mahadasha of Ketu spans 7 years. Throughout this time, individuals may encounter a mix of positive and negative experiences. The Antardasha (sub-period) of this planet lasts anywhere from 11 months to a year and a half. During Mahadasha, one might find themselves struggling in their relationships with children, facing conflicts at home, or preferring solitude over family interactions. If you notice frequent arguments at home or find yourself scolding children without reason, it could be a sign that Ketu’s influence is unfavorable in your chart.
